GBN Wohnungsunternehmen Nienburg/Weser trusts ecoworks with the serial energetic renovation of three apartment buildings

Nienburg (Weser) / Berlin, April 10, 2025 - Another groundbreaking serial renovation project is underway: ecoworks is once again revolutionizing energy-efficient building renovation—this time in northern Germany. GBN Wohnungsunternehmen GmbH Nienburg/Weser (www.gbn-nienburg.de) has partnered with the innovative Berlin-based company to transform three 1950s apartment blocks in Nienburg/Weser into flagship projects for the energy transition.

The buildings, currently classified as energy efficiency class H, will soon leave their outdated status behind. Thanks to cutting-edge serial renovation techniques, energy consumption will be drastically reduced, achieving remarkable results: upon completion of the work by ecoworks as general contractor, the buildings will meet energy efficiency class A and Efficiency House Level 55 standards.

Key Features of the Serial Energy Renovation:

  • Facade renovation using energy-efficient modular facade elements
  • Installation of a high-performance photovoltaic system
  • Cellar ceiling insulation for maximum energy savings
  • Serial pipework renovation for future-proof building technology
  • Connection to an existing municipal building network (leveraging a longstanding partnership), including upgrades with renewable energy sources such as a new air-to-water heat pump

This collaboration between ecoworks (www.ecoworks.tech) and GBN marks another significant step toward sustainable housing with reduced energy consumption and increased environmental responsibility. The numbers speak for themselves: a 73% reduction in final energy consumption and an almost complete elimination of CO₂ emissions. This translates to an annual savings of a staggering 140 tons of CO₂—another milestone on the path to climate-neutral housing. While serial renovations have already been successfully implemented across southern and western Germany, this project brings the innovative approach to northern Germany, utilizing factory-made modular facade elements.

Emanuel Heisenberg, founder and CEO of ecoworks, expressed his enthusiasm: “Reducing CO₂ emissions by nearly 100% aligns perfectly with our vision: ‘our mission. no emission.’ This project is further proof that serial renovation can tackle the gigaton challenge. Our goal is to save one gigaton of CO₂ by 2045—and we are well on our way!” With this ambitious project, ecoworks once again demonstrates that climate-neutral renovations can be achieved in record time. Serial renovation isn’t just the future—it’s already here.

Claus Vollmer, Managing Director of GBN Wohnungsunternehmen GmbH Nienburg/Weser, shared his perspective: “We were convinced by ecoworks’ potential for energy savings and CO₂ reduction, as well as their comprehensive concept. Not only do the significant energy savings speak for themselves, but the cost-effectiveness of serial renovation also stands out. Thanks to subsidies, renovation costs are comparable to conventional methods while achieving better efficiency standards—and all this within a significantly shorter construction timeframe.”

Advantages Over Conventional Renovation Methods

Serial renovation offers clear benefits compared to traditional approaches:

  • Speed: ecoworks completes projects in just a few weeks on average, providing all services from a single source. Conventional renovations often require extensive coordination across multiple trades.
  • Quality: Industrial prefabrication ensures a high standard of quality, overcoming challenges posed by labor shortages in conventional renovations.

“Our tenants experience minimal disruption during serial renovations since interventions are non-invasive and carried out externally while the buildings remain occupied,” added Claus Vollmer. “There’s no need for temporary housing arrangements, and living conditions improve significantly. Furthermore, this pilot project is replicable across our portfolio. These advantages—combined with fixed-price offers—convinced us to choose serial renovation with ecoworks as the innovation leader.”
